Holds can only be placed through Library Loan. When you fill out the form be sure to place a note in the notes section of the request stating that you would like a hold placed on a particular item. You can, also,  request the item through Interlibrary Loan if you do need a copy. Additionally, we can perform a recall in certain cases. In a recall, we inform the person currently holding the item that it is now due in 48 hours due to need. We do not recall books being used as textbooks, however, nor will we recall unless the book has been held for at least six weeks. Library Loan is usually a quicker option.
