Are you trying to separate your students into groups in the first place, or create activities that will have students use these groups to only post messages to one another?

To do the former, you can create groups in the Administration block, then clicking users, and then groups.

To do the latter, you can change group settings if editing is on from your main course page. I've attached a screenshot that highlights the icon that you can click. If separate groups are enabled, then you will see the icon of two silhouettes, like in the screenshot. If groups aren't enabled, you'll see a single silhouette.
