Viruses are always a pain. Thankfully there are ways to get help.
If you suspect you have a virus we recommend running the following software programs .
1) JRT - Junkware Removal Tool. This program is a first-level defense to help combat the effects of malware/spyware/viruses. You simply download it, open it and when prompted, press enter. It will do the rest and notify you when it is done scanning. After scanning, it's recommended that you restart your machine. Download JRT here
Once that has been ran and your computer rebooted, we recommend running the next program to act as a "2nd opinion" and ensure all instances of malware/spyware/viruses have been removed.
2) Malware bytes - This program provides another layer of scanning that JRT may have missed. To run, simply download the program from the website listed and run. It will do the rest and when finished give you a detailed report. If any problems are detected, it will give you the option to clean or quarantine instances of trouble. In most cases you will want to clean and let the program do the rest. Download Malwarebytes here.
After you have ran those programs, ensure that your virus protection is updated to the most current release, and that your Windows operating system also has downloaded and installed the latest patches. If you are needing an antivirus program, the Library Help Desk highly recommends Microsoft Security Essentials due to it's robustness, ease of use, and price. (FREE!!) Download Microsoft Security Essentials here
If you are still having problems after running the software listed, please bring your laptop to the Library Help Desk to speak with a Technical Associate who can provide further assistance.
